Ateljee

Continuing the family’s passion for art, the Ateljee is an exciting creative space for guests to engage with artworks, artists and makers.

VAN HORISON TOT HORISON

Van Horison tot Horison (From Horizon to Horizon) explores the South African landscape through a dialogue between historical mastery and contemporary vision. Inspired by Lina Spies’s poem Blydskap, the exhibition examines the horizon as a site of reflection, resilience, and artistic lineage.

The showcase honors the legacies of icons like JH Pierneef, Maggie Laubser, and Irma Stern, whose distinct visual languages—from Pierneef’s structured geometry to Stern’s expressive vitality—serve as a foundation for modern reinterpretation.

Featuring fourteen contemporary artists, the exhibition spans painting, printmaking, sculpture, and sound. Highlights include:

  • Immersive Installations: A sculptural boat installation by Emma Willemse.
  • Sonic Landscapes: A musical composition of Spies’s poetry by sound artist Conrad Oosthuizen.
  • Modern Responses: Artworks by Michael Amery, Jenny Parsons, and others that echo the technical brilliance of their predecessors while shaping new narratives.

This interactive experience at the La Motte Ateljee affirms the landscape as an enduring source of renewal, inviting guests to witness a shared conversation between past and present.
