Bastille Festival 2023

The annual Franschhoek Bastille Festival happens during the weekend of 14 – 16 July 2023, but at La Motte we celebrate our French heritage during the whole of July. Winter in the Winelands is the perfect time for sipping on red wines and enjoying comfort food. Don’t miss out on our wine promotions, French-inspired winter recipes and relaxed farm-style guest experience.

Visit the La Motte stand at the Bastille Festival Marquee in Franschhoek on 15 and 16 July or turn left into the estate for our own fête française with French-inspired menus and wines and a relaxing day out.

Classic 1837 Croissants, Baguettes & Pâtisserie

Croissants are part of the category of French pastries called Viennoiserie, said to have their origin in Vienna. Today, the croissant only has its shape in common with the original Austrian inspiration as its puffed pastry is a French innovation and tradition sold in Paris since 1837. An everyday treat in the La Motte Bakery, it is especially when celebrating our French heritage, that a croissant with coffee or bubbly becomes irrésistible!

What is also irresistible, is our beautiful selection of Pâtisserie for the Bastille festivities, including favourites such as Mille-feuille, Paris-Brest, Macarons and Palmiers. Join us for a sweet treat with coffee, tea or bubbly or let us pack you some charming treats to take home!

And then there is of course the highlight of any bakery - bread! While the baguette is the symbol of the French lifestyle and an iconic French loaf, there are more to French breads. Enjoy artisan breads in all their beauty at the La Motte Bakery and Garden Café for the Bastille weekend - whether you sit down for breakfast or lunch or buy your favourite loaf to take home.

French Flavour

French cuisine is not all cordon bleu with dainty turned vegetables, trimmed cutlets and a delicate jus. Some traditional and popular French recipes such as Boeuf Bourguignon and Coq au Vin are quite rustic. Try some of these fabulous French flavours (with suggested wine pairings!) from our Bastille Black Board Menu that includes Beef Bourguignon Crêpes, Coq Au Vin, Mini French Onion & Camembert Baguette and Bacon & Spinach Quiche.

Make sure to book for breakfast or lunch!

If you can't join us for the weekend, why not try some French inspiration at home with a delicious recipe? Soupe à l'oignon is a slow-cooked French onion soup topped with a decadent cheesy slice of baguette. Try a new version by Sam Linsell – the French onion grilled cheese sandwich made with our delicious sourdough bread.
