Grapes for the wine originate from vineyards in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.

The growing season for the 2022 harvest was uneventful with ample cold units in winter and sufficient irrigation water. Cold and wet conditions during budding didn't have a neg- ative effect although higher rainfall did result in increased disease pressure, especially from powdery mildew. A relatively cool summer supported flavour development, but heat- wave conditions late January caused slightly lower acidity and slightly higher pH levels than in 2021. It also caused some sunburn.

A variety of soil types and clones are repre- sented, but each vineyard grows in its own macro climate. All the vineyards are trellised according to the Perold system and are man- aged to maintain the perfect balance be- tween leaf coverage and yield. Thanks to the variety in terroir, each area produces distinc- tive grapes to contribute unique flavour and structure.

The blend consists of Merlot (65%), Cabernet Franc (25%), Cabernet Sauvignon (6%) and Petit Verdot (4%). In the vineyards a combina- tion of hand and machine harvesting is used. Grapes were sorted in the cellar and trans- ferred to stainless steel tanks. Fermentation took place during pump overs and at be- tween 25° C and 30° C.

The classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon is prominent in some of the world's most iconic wines. In the 2021 La Motte Millennium, some Petit Verdot contributes further complexity of flavour and intensity of colour. Aro- matic blackberries and plums are dominant with nuances of fruit cake and dark toffee providing subtle sweetness. Well-considered barrel matura- tion adds hints of cloves as well as charred oak flavours. Medium-full, the 2022 La Motte Millenni- umTM offers soft but lively tannins and a lingering berry aftertaste.
