Syrah is one of the most terroir-friendly red wines and this broad-mindedness relates to its versatility. When it comes to the company it keeps, Syrah is one of the most compatible wines to enjoy with food and one of the most generous wines to enjoy with friends.
Syrah is all about sharing and therefore no wonder that it is a wine that has become synonymous with La Motte, a wine farm that is all about sharing.
The Wine Bearer by Toby Megaw is a 4m tall bronze sculpture of a woman with her cup overflowing. She welcomes guests to La Motte and symbolises the sharing of the estate’s beauty and bounty - setting the scene for the remainder of the estate’s exceptional offering.
Sharing is at the essence of the estate’s food offering. L’Ami means friend in French and this Family Brasserie is all about bringing friends and family together around a table and a quintessential part of its menu is dishes to share on the table. The Bakery in the picturesque historic gardens focuses on the breaking and sharing of bread in its original and wholesome beauty, while the Wine Tasting Room is of course, all about sharing the latest vintages with wine afficionados. Guests can share in the estate’s commitment to sustainability on a mountainside hiking trail, in its devotion to local produce browsing the exceptional pieces in the La Motte Farm Shop and Spens and then, a privilege quite special to a wine farm, an invitation to not only enjoy the exceptional art on exhibition, but also to share in the process of making with a program of seasonal art workshops.
Taking all these elements into account and especially for Shiraz South Africa’s Seven Days of Shiraz (21 – 28 August), La Motte dedicates the whole of August to Syrah in the way it is shared on the estate.
