Embodying the values of dedication and excellence, La Motte is proud to release the 2012 vintage of its flagship red wine, Hanneli R. Carefully crafted and blended from Syrah (60%), Grenache (30%) and Petit Syrah (10%) and barrel maturated for 40 months, the wine offers exceptional depth, complexity and personality.
Combining the perfumy flavours and minerality from the cooler Cape South Coast climate (50% of the Syrah from Elim and the Grenache from Walker Bay) with the creamy texture and elegance from weathered granite soils in the Franschhoek Valley (50% Syrah and the Petit Syrah), the 2012 Hanneli R capitalised on a vintage with lower yields and concentrated flavours.
The grape varieties in the blend were harvested and sorted separately and the wines were fermented separately and matured in 300-litre French oak barrels. Blending took place after the 40 months’ maturation. The wine was bottled in October 2016 and 3 300 bottles were released.
The distinctive nose shows rose petal perfume with black berry and mulberry fruit, cinnamon and black pepper spice and follows through in a lively and elegant palate with a lingering aftertaste. This complex Syrah-based blend is the ideal partner to red meat in most of its forms. With its well-structured tannins, this wine beautifully complements the intensity of hard cheese.
