Found Amongst Fragments: A Workshop in Collage and Reconstruction
Join paper artist Catherine Holtzhausen as she invites participants into the layered paper process behind her work. Her practice involves painting paper, cutting intricate forms by hand, and layering these fragments into tactile works that explore tenderness, resilience, landscape and the quiet poetry of the natural world. The workshops aim to offer participants not only an opportunity to create, but to experience a way of seeing: noticing hidden forms, embracing intuition, and finding possibility within fragments.
During this full day collage workshop, guests will receive a playful introduction to collage as a process of transformation, where images are built through painting, cutting, and reassembly. Participants begin with observational drawing and intuitive mark-making inspired by natural forms and painting expressive papers using gouache and ink. These exercises focus on loosening perception and shifting attention toward shape, rhythm, and texture rather than accuracy. After a lunch break while materials dry, the second half of the workshop moves into collage. Working with these painted papers alongside curated pre-painted and found materials, participants are encouraged to look at abstract shapes and discover hidden forms within them. Characters, botanical worlds, creatures, imagined landscapes or quiet narratives. Exploring cutting, layering, and composition.
This workshop will include a coffee and pastry morning break and seasonal lunch curated especially for this workshop. All the materials will be provided, and guests will go home with a curated kit and their new creations. Come as you are - all you need to bring is your creativity and curiosity.
