La Motte’s acclaimed Millennium is based on the famous red wines of Bordeaux and with the Franschhoek Valley celebrating its French heritage with the annual Bastille Festival in July, it is quite timely to introduce the latest vintage of this stalwart South African red blend.
Although this classic blend of Merlot (65%), Cabernet Franc (25%), Cabernet Sauvignon (6%) and Petit Verdot (4%), matured in 300-litre French oak barrels for 12 months and is a beautiful partner to some classic French recipes, the 2022 La Motte Millennium is much more than a French favourite.
Making the most of the diversity of the Cape Winelands, the 2022 La Motte Millennium, originates form vineyards in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek each contributing distinctive flavours and structure to the wine. Growing conditions were favourable with some rain-induced disease pressure and mid-summer heatwaves resulting in a slightly lower acidity and higher pH levels than the previous year.
Expect aromatic blackberries and plums with nuances of fruit cake and dark toffee flavours. The well-considered barrel maturation contributes hints of cloves and charred oak to the medium full palate with its soft, but lively tannins and a lingering berry aftertaste.
A trusted choice for quiet fireside conversations, dinner table debates or festive get-togethers, the 2022 La Motte Millennium is also an exceptionally versatile partner to food with French friends such as cassoulet and chateaubriand as well as local champions such as lamb chops on the braai, ostrich sosaties and even wintery vegetable dishes.
